Christmas Treats- Gluten-free Bread Sauce

Gluten-free Bread sauce

You shouldn’t have to miss out on this treat and now you don’t! Takes minutes.


  • 1 large onion
  • 4 cloves or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 570ml/1 pint milk
  • a pinch of salt
  • 6 peppercorns
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 30g/1oz butter
  • 110g/4oz fresh white gluten-free breadcrumbs

Preparation method

  1. Peel the onion chop it into quarters.
  2. Pour the milk into a saucepan and add the onion quarters, salt, peppercorns, cloves and bay leaf.
  3. Bring the milk up to the boil and then remove from the heat and leave for 15 minutes.
  4. Remove the peppercorns and bay leaf- tricky! Removing the bay leaf is most important.
  5. Add the butter and breadcrumbs and cook very slowly for another 15 minutes, stirring frequently.
  6. Remove from the heat and blitz with a stick blender until smooth.
