Jus-Rol launches Gluten-Free Puff Pastry!

26 Nov

I just spied this new product launch in the Christmas 2016 issue of Tesco Magazine ( pg 58). Jus-Rol have brought out a gluten-free puff pastry! I was more than a little bit excited to read this, as my attempts at gluten-free puff pastry have been long-winded and only semi-successful. It took so much time and effort, plus a shed-load of frustration at how brittle the dough was that I’ve only tried it once (to make Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s cheese and onion pasties). I swore it wasn’t worth the effort, but a little bit of me always hankers after a puff pastry tart every now and again. Especially when you see those recipes in magazines like Good Food that just need a ready-to-roll pack and you know you don’t have that option.

Tesco says that it will be £2 for a 280g pack, according to the Jus-Rol link above this is just 1 sheet. My mind is going into over-drive thinking of all the wonderful things I might now be able to make! So, I will be trying to hunt some down (presumably in a larger Tesco store) and I will be reporting back here with high hopes. Watch this space….

I have tried 4 supermarkets this morning, none of whom stock this item. I have also tried looking for the Silly Yak products to once again without success. These are the only two products that don’t contain eggs.

It may just be the time of year, lots of supermarkets remove smaller selling or lower profit lines at Christmas to make way for seasonal goods. I’d try again in a couple of weeks. I have seen Silly Yak in Tesco, but not for years – do they still make it? The only place I can find Jus Rol is in Morrisons which is a 30 minute drive from my house. Mind you, you’re not missing out- it tastes vastly superior when you make your own. Check out some of my blog posts for instructions!

Thanks for the info, I was told by both Asda and Tesco that they have cut down their GF ranges in my local stores, however it wasn’t clear whether this applied just to the local stores, whether it was just for the Christmas period, or if it is permanent!! My wife has bravely volunteered to make our own.

Good luck! If I can share a few tips I’ve learnt along the way – it’s best to line your dish as gluten-free pastry seems to have a nasty habit of sticking like glue! I’d also add some Xanthan Gum (1 tsp) should be enough, as it really helps to replicate the role of the gluten and makes it much easier to handle, both before and after baking. Rolling out can sometimes be nigh on impossible, but it is improved if you chill the dough for at least 30 minutes. If you are still having problems then try rolling it between 2 sheets of greaseproof or clingfilm. If all else fails, press it into your dish. But don’t let me put your off! It really tastes far better than shop bought and without the nasty chemical additives!
